Remembering those formative years of my life ,brings back good memories. Our school was located in the capital of Guyana , George Town. It’s the place where the American pastor ,name James Jones ,orchestrated the mass suicide of all his followers. Being the only Filipino in my class was not a problem. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have studied elementary and high school in Umtata High School, South Eastern Cape, South Africa. The medium of instruction was English ,but it was compulsory for all students to master the second language, Afrikaans . Arikaans actually originated from the Dutch language. Presently, it is considered as the "Old Dutch". Umtata High was not originally designed to be a multiracial school, but with the massive influx of foreign workers and emigrants in the area ,resulted in a large number of foreign enrollees . More than half of the population in our class were foreigners. Strange enough, the problem of apartheid or racial discrimination was never an issue in our school. Our school was acknowledged as being the model school of the new South Africa. Photos |

Velez College is located in the uptown area of Cebu City, Philippines. Back then, there were only 3 courses being offered at Velez ,namely B.S. Biology, Medical Technology and Nursing. I was shocked to see the dilapidated condition of their buildings. At first glance, I mistook our classrooms at the extension area, as our ROTC firing range. The library building was a duplicate of the "ADDAMS FAMILY" castle . Fortunately, the high standard of education was more that enough to compensate for the few unpleasantness that we experienced. SWU(South Western University) is located in the southern part of Cebu City , Philippines. One good thing about this school ,is the presence of many restaurants /canteens inside and outside the campus. Rest a sure ,that you will always have food to comfort you ,especially when you fail an exam. I strongly recommend that you make sure that you really want to become a medical doctor or else, studying medicine in SWU ,would feel like your teeth are being drilled for hours by an inexperience dentist. USJR is a Catholic school institution located in downtown Cebu . Although the neighborhood may not be inviting , but the moment you enter the school premises , it's a different environment all together . The library is something to be admired . It enormous collections of books , and it's huge area that occupies the entire right wing of the 2nd floor . You can't help but say "WOW" . The friendly atmosphere that welcomes you ,and the A-class graduate school professors are reasons for students to be proud of this institution. Photos |
